Resort Description

Secluded, colonial-style resort built on a cliff overlooking beach – Established in 1887, this is the Caribbean's first resort. Set on a cliff overlooking a pink-sand beach, the original buildings remain intact, and the view is just as dramatic as it was over a century earlier. The property has been vastly expanded and improved, but the Old World charm remains intact. Once a vacation spot of the world's rich and famous, the resort continues to drawn a discerning clientele, and in 2007 received Barbados's Pillar of Tourism Award.

Accommodations: Guests can stay in the Historic Hotel or in the privately owned studios and suites. The Historic Hotel contains a variety of guest rooms, suites, and studios within its restored, original 2-story guest house. Privately-owned studios and suites are housed within the newer buildings constructed (and built to match the original's colonial-style architecture) as part of an ongoing expansion project. NOTE: Ocean-view rooms in the original guest house are not air-conditioned. New accommodations have brighter furnishings and large bathtubs, while the original rooms and suites feature antique furnishings, wood floors, coral-stone walls, and 12-foot ceilings. TIP: An in-room grocery service is available, allowing guests to take advantage of the kitchenettes available in many of the rooms.

Dining & Entertainment: There are 2 a la carte restaurants on-site. L'Azure serves classic and contemporary Caribbean cuisine, with a dining balcony and panoramic views of the coastline. On Sundays there is a brunch with live Caribbean gospel music, and traditional Barbadian lunch served buffet-style. Opened in 2005, Zen is an Asian restaurant with a menu of Thai and Japanese specialties, including sushi. The Carriage House Poolside Restaurant serves grilled fare, light meals, and drinks throughout the day.

Recreation: Set on the cliff top, the original Roman-style pool is adorned with Doric columns, and is still the favorite spot on the property for swimming, sunbathing and especially photo opportunities. Three lagoon-style pools, built into the cliffside and connected by cascading waterfalls, are a more recent addition that allows guests 300,000 gallons of water to swim. Complimentary chaise lounges and boogie boards are available at the beach. A free shuttle service brings guests to and from Bridgetown, the island's capital.
